Forward to Avant

Local Ride
When you only have time for a quickie.

If you have a favorite ride you'd like to share contact us for details on how you can submit it.Oklahoma State Highway 97 is relatively short stretch of highway that runs from Sapulpa to Sand Springs. It was commissioned in 1952 and extended north into the Osage a few years later. That section, where it passes over the rolling hills north of Sand Springs, is the most scenic part of the road. But just when it's getting good OK-97 ends abruptly at the gates of the John Zink Ranch. End of the line.

Or is it?

Not really. If you take a right, the continue north you can ride all the way past Highway 20 and Skiatook to the small town of Avant. North of 20 this county highway weaves through the Osage and makes for a wonderful ride on a Summer day. Years ago there were signs along here that read "Country Highway 97," but I've never found any evidence to confirm those memories.

As you come into town watch on your left for the old bridge where the highway used to cross Bird Creek. From here continue north on OK-11 into the Osage or head west on a county road and you'll find a pleasant surprise and a lovely lake.

It's two-lane blacktop at its best- and it's less than 15 minutes from downtown Tulsa. Enjoy.
